Mundu Magic

Generally crisp white  or cream with a coloured border, a mundu is the iconic image of a Kerala garment. Worn around the waist, it’s a close relative of the lungi favoured by other South Indian states. The borders vary from thin grey strips to bright green or orange to thick gold ones for ceremonies like weddings.

Worn full length during social gatherings- while interacting with elders and women, it’s quickly folded in half to above the knee for the more practical tasks of running, cycling or dealing with the rains. There’s lots of leg on display in Kerala!

We love Kerala and HAD to experiment using  the super versatile garment and are excited to share the results soon!

NBNW ♥ Kerala

Dominated by it’s long stretch of coastline, Kerala is a state of sea, coconuts, jackfruits, palm trees, sun, bananas, rains and fish.

It has a rich and strong cultural and social heritage and has given birth to some of the country’s best painters, musicians, poets, writers and political activists. There is an immense love for food and drink and a mix of simplicity and vibrancy among the population.

We’ve been exploring the region-  Kannur in the north and Trivandrum in the south, experiencing the culture and  people, learning about the traditional wear and artforms and are excited to create from our adventures!
